Five Smooth Stones: Hope's Revolutionary War Diary by Kristiana Gregory

Reviewed by Ms. Gulotta-Bruno from Arongen
America is in the midst of a battle for their independence from England. In Hope’s journal she records her fears about her father, who joined the Patriot side and the approaching danger to her town. Hope is worried about her brother Ethan, who believes their father switched sides and joined the Tories. Ethan enlists with the Tories to go in search of their father. Hope’s family is left unprotected. The British are moving in closer to the city. Do they stay and see what fate befalls them? Or leave to seek refugee with other family elsewhere? It was a time where families and neighbors were fighting against each other, and allegiance to the cause was quickly changed in order to protect oneself against treason.
